PayungLah is the premier umbrella sharing company in Malaysia, committed to providing an affordable and convenient umbrella sharing service for commuters across the country. Our mission is to not only make daily commutes easier but also contribute to a greener Malaysia by reducing waste.

Now, we are thrilled to present Payunglah's "Malaysia, Truly Asia" Umbrella Design Competition! We invite talented designers and creative minds from around the world to showcase their artistic flair in capturing the diverse and vibrant essence of Malaysia. With its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality, Malaysia offers endless inspiration for your designs.

This competition is a celebration of the beauty of Malaysia through the lens of an umbrella. An umbrella is not merely a practical tool but also a means of expression. It can be a canvas for creativity, storytelling, and a reflection of a nation's spirit.

If your design is selected, it will be proudly printed and displayed on the streets, showcasing our local talent and promoting our vibrant design community. The competition begins on 30 Aug 2023 and the registration will be closed on 12 Sep 2023. You can submit up to 3 entries to participate in this competition. All artworks must be submitted by 03 Oct 2023 at 11:59 PM UTC+8.

Winners will be announced on 23 Oct 2023.
Objectives
  • Stimulate creative and captivating designs: Encourage participants to create visually stunning and captivating designs for the umbrella, as the winning design will be printed and showcased on PayungLah's shared umbrellas. This will allow for increased exposure and visibility, captivating the attention of both locals and foreigners on the streets.
  • Celebrate Cultural Diversity: Malaysia is renowned for its harmonious blend of various cultures, including Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences. Designers are encouraged to weave elements from these cultures into their umbrella designs, reflecting the nation's multicultural fabric.
  • Showcase the beauty of Malaysia: Inspire participants to incorporate elements of Malaysia's rich culture, vibrant landscapes, and diverse heritage into their designs. The selected design will serve as a representation of the beauty and uniqueness of Malaysia, capturing the attention of passersby and sparking curiosity about the country.
  • Support local design talent: The competition aims to provide a platform for local designers to showcase their creativity and talent. By selecting a local designer's work for the umbrella design, the competition supports and nurtures the growth of local design talent, potentially leading to further opportunities and collaborations.
Prizes

Winning designs will have the names of the artists credited alongside them as part of the design attribution on the printed umbrellas, in accordance with the competition sponsor's agreement.

All the participants who submitted at least 1 entry (including winners and Top 30 finalists) will receive an e-Certificate as a recognition of participation.

All deadlines are at 11:59 PM UTC+8 on the corresponding day unless otherwise noted. The competition sponsor(s) reserve the right to update the competition timeline if they deem it necessary.

Deliverables
  • One (1) showcase image in PNG format.
  • One (1) submission image in PNG format.
  • One (1) editable submission source file in Adobe Photoshop (PSD) format
What I Need To Do?
What do I need to design?
You're required to design the umbrella with the following criteria:
  • Design the umbrella according to the mockup template provided
  • Adhere to the theme: "Malaysia, Truly Asia"
  • Incorporate only elements that are copyright-free and approved for commercial use.
  • Avoid including any sensitive elements, such as politics, racism, bias, gender discrimination, etc.
Submission Files
  • Participants must design the umbrella using the provided mockup template (in PSD format).
  • The submitted design must be saved in both PNG and PSD format and the output dimensions should be at least 200cm x 200cm. 
  • Leave one surface of the umbrella untouched for the competition sponsor's logo (PayungLah).
  • Ensure that the background color of the umbrella is in designated blue color (#163261). 
Showcase Image
In addition to the submission files, please include a showcase image in PNG format using the showcase template provided.

Submission Files

Each participant must submit at least 1 qualified entry to participate in this competition. You may submit up to 3 entries to win the competition.

For each entry, you are required to upload at least 1 image to showcase your design idea. The showcase images are suggested to be in 800 x 600 pixels or in the ratio of 4:3.

Besides, You are also required to attach the submission files as per the deliverable, in the file format of:
  • Adobe Photoshop (PSD)
  • PNG Images
Top 32 Finalists

Up to 32 top entries will be shortlisted as the finalists to enter the final round of winners selection. The shortlist will be announced between the submission deadline and the result announcement date.

The judging criteria are as follows:

  • Relevance to Theme (50%): This criterion evaluates how effectively the design captures the essence of "Malaysia, Truly Asia" and showcases the country's cultural diversity or natural beauty.
  • Creativity and Originality (40%): This aspect considers the level of creativity, originality, and uniqueness exhibited in the design. It assesses whether the design stands out from other entries and offers a fresh perspective on the theme.
  • Overall Impression (10%): This factor gauges how the design leaves a lasting impression. It considers whether the design leaves a memorable mark on the viewer's mind.
Announcement of the Top 32 finalists will be on 7 October 2023. The selected designs will be posted on Payunglah's Facebook Page for public voting.
Choosing the Winners
Selection of the Winners:
  • The winners are determined based on the number of Facebook likes each design received during the voting period. 
  • The voting period will be started on 7 October 2023 until 20 October 2023.
  • The Top 10 highest voted designs will be the winners.
Please noted that not all of the Top 10 winning designs will be printed on Payunglah's shared umbrellas. The final decision on which designs will be printed on the umbrellas rests with Payunglah.
Result Announcement
  • Top 32 Finalists will be announced between 03 Oct 2023 and 23 Oct 2023
  • Winners will be announced on 23 Oct 2023
